The Breakdown and The Split

Chapter 4 and 5 summary Noughts and Crosses.

Chapter 4 of Noughts and Crosses was mostly based on Lynette and her past. Lynette and Jude get in a fight with each other in front of their dad as Callum walks in. Their mother was not their to control them which lead to Lynette getting injured from Jude. Their dad had no control over them whatsoever but did try his best to break them apart. Lynette and Jude’s argument was about how she doesn’t see herself as a Nought but rather a Cross. This infuriates Jude which makes him lash out towards her and assaults her. He explains that they’re letting Lynette live in a fantasy and no one has told her to snap out of it because she’s everyone’s favourite and Callum only cares about his “Dagger” friend Sephy. Callum also gets irritated and the two manage to have a fight. We soon learn what had happened to Lynette and her past and why she considers herself a Nought rather than a Cross. She had a Cross boyfriend and was beaten up by other Noughts because of it. She was hospitalised for the injuries and is still trying to recover from it. Sephy tries to throw a party and tries to invite Callum. Lynette commits suicide but everyone thinks it’s an accident. Lynette had been killed by a bus. We find out later in the book that she wrote a letter to Callum explaining why she did what she did and Callum hates her for it and calls her a coward.

Chapter 5 in Noughts and Crosses shows Sephy and Minnie’s Mother overdosing on alcohol and sleeping pills and is put in hospital. Sephy learns about her fathers past and when her mum gets better they take a day out to Dundale Shopping. Sephy asks Callum to come meet her so she doesn’t have to suffer alone. We then see Jude telling Callum to not going to the shopping mall and then Callum realises why he said that. He rushes to the shopping mall before the bomb goes off to save Sephy but up to 7 people had died in the bombing.
